Finishing touches: Decorating the buffet

Time to get back to the dining room and (as always) the finishing touches are proving a little challenging. We have a large, rustic timber buffet in desperate need of some decorating and styling. So I'm looking for the essential elements of a well decorated buffet. Here are some of the images in my inspiration folder...

We need some bright, modern elements that are still in sympathy with the rustic styling of the other dining room pieces. I'd love to hear, what do you think are the perfect decorative touches to style a buffet? What lives on the buffet in your house?

  1. I love your inspiration! We are also preparing to move into a farmhouse and I think a a few stacked pottery serving pieces might look nice in addition to a pair of hurricanes or perhaps a plant (since that seems to be a theme!).

  2. We don't have a buffet :(
But we did I'd love some ceramic lamps and/or hurricane lamps/candle holders and some books maybe :)

  3. I love decorating above the buffet just as much as planning what sits on it. I love the pics above where they have placed prints or photos above the buffet in a nice symmetrical alignment. On the buffet, I love the look of a lamp at either end for height, and perhaps something a bit lower in the middle. A tray with an assortment of trinkets, for example. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but were you planning to place one of your new chairs on either side of the buffet too?

    Exciting times!

  4. That first image is amazing B! Lovely inspiration. So many great things for decorating buffets. My faves are books, lamps, bowls, candles and trays. Can't wait to see what you come up with :)

  5. Love that 2nd to last pic. I think fresh flowers are a must, and then I like quirky things that show the personality of the owner. xxx

  8. I'd put a modern, colourful abstract art above to give a modern edge, maybe a set of contemporary gourd lamps in white, and a collection of beautiful white pottery, or a pretty bowl of flowers. I'm sure it will look great Brooke :)

  9. I'm on the same lines as Anna... a large painting (or a huge mirror) with a pair of lamps would look great.
I set up a little bar on mine with a small collection of decanters (they add some nice sparkle) -What ever you do, I look forward to seeing! Have a good weekend!

  10. It's such a traditional piece of furniture that I think simple and rustic is best. I agree with Vic, fresh flowers are a must but I also think 2 lamps for a bit of symmetry finishes it off nicely.

  12. Our buffet has become the coffee machine station!
I have three beautiful photos hanging over it (or will be when I put some nails in the walls)
Enjoy decorating your buffet, looking forward to seeing the finished result.
    Have a great day.
